Somerset County Women’s League Division One
Swiss Valley Rangers 0, Bridgwater Town 9
The Bridgwater girls made the most of the wide pitch at Clevedon School with several of their goals coming from moves down the flanks as they completely out-played their hosts on Sunday afternoon.
Both Faye Edwards and Tammy Murphy - who took over in the Bridgwater goal at the start of the second half - were virtual spectators as 95 per cent of the play took place in the home team’s half.
Player of the Match Ami Ward, in particular, caused all sorts of problems on the right wing throughout the game, and it was from her cross that Gemma Baker opened the scoring on 8 minutes forcing the ball into the net with her knee in a goalmouth scramble.
Nine minutes later and another move started by Ward on the right saw Baker get her second as she finishing well from 15 yards after a lightning three-player passing move on the edge of the penalty area cut through the home defence.
Number three followed after 25 minutes as Anneka Russ received a pass from Ward and finished clinically from 10 yards, and a repeat move ten minutes later resulted in number four as Ward got her name on the score sheet after a neat interchange of passes with Russ.
On the stroke of half-time a route-one move ended in Baker completing her hat-trick as she calmly chipped the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty area to make it 5-0.
Six minutes into the second period a Russ corner was blasted into her own net by a defender to make it 6-0 and Mandy Gornicki-Bond got number seven just past the hour mark, poking the ball past the goalkeeper after another goalmouth scramble.
After a surging run from her own half into the opponent’s penalty area, Ward got her second of the game - Town’s 8th - on 76 minutes as she slotted the ball past the hapless Swiss Valley goalkeeper and Russ - also with her second of the game - completed the scoring with five minutes remaining, blasting the ball into the net from close-range giving the goalkeeper no chance.
