DON’T panic! This was the message to Bridgwater Town’s players and supporters after two away league defeats in four days.

After winning seven games in a row before last week, Bridgwater confidently rose to third in Division One of the Zamaretto Southern League and were looking to push their way to the front of the queue for promotion.

But Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat to Bishops Cleeve was followed by a 1-0 loss away to Yate Town on Saturday.

Despite the disappointing defeats, joint manager Craig Laird told the Bridgwater Mercury the club had plenty to be optimistic about – and were still fully focused on promotion this season.

He said: “It is obviously disappointing to lose matches but we are not worried.

“We created opportunities, which is the hard thing, but just did not take our chances.

“The players haven’t been quite good enough over the last couple of games, but we will not feel sorry for ourselves and try to win as many matches as we can.”

The side will have two chances to get back to winning ways in front of their own supporters this week – as they face North Leigh at home Tuesday night 7.45 pm k.o. before playing Cinderford at Fairfax Park on Saturday.

Bridgwater will go into the two games without influential midfielder Ben Kirk, who will be out for up to two weeks after straining a ligament in his ankle.

But Laird believes his players will roll their sleeves up and get up for the challenge.

He added: “We will find out if these losses will cost us in the next few weeks, but we have to focus – we are playing well and creating chances.

“This is a great league to play in and there are no easy games.

“I cannot ask anymore of my players at the moment and we are in a really good position. “There are many twists and turns left in this league yet.”
