Somerset County Women’s League Division 1
Winsham 1, BRIDGWATER TOWN 9
On an extremely sloping and uneven pitch the Bridgwater girls put in another fine ‘away-day’ performance and completely dominated the game from start to finish. In fact they were so dominant their tally of nine goals didn’t do the team justice.
Charlotte Barnes was the first of eight Bridgwater players to get their names on the score sheet with a fine solo effort, running for thirty yards before beating the goalkeeper low to her right in the fifth minute.
Twelve minutes later Aneka Russ doubled Town’s advantage finishing from a tight angle after running on to the ball from a route-one pass over the defence.
The home side got one back on 31 minutes after a rare foray into the Bridgwater half. Some poor marking by the Town defenders at a corner left the goal-scorer unmarked to head past a stranded Faye Edwards.
Two minutes later Town regained their two-goal advantage as a right wing cross from Gemma Baker was volleyed home at the far post by Sophie Harris - who had earlier missed two similar chances - and on the stroke of half-time captain Amber Moule headed number four from an Ami Ward corner.
Mandy Gornicki-Bond was next on the score sheet as she bundled the ball into the net from a Ward cross on 52 minutes before Ward found the net with a shot from 20 yards to make it 6-1 on the hour mark.
Another solo effort from Barnes two minutes later resulted in number seven. After beating two defenders her first shot was blocked by the goalkeeper, but Barnes followed up to net the rebound for her second of the game.
Hannah Brown (pictured) doesn’t score many goal but when she does they are usually spectacular. She added another to her portfolio with an unstoppable shot from 30 yards in the 73rd minute to notch number eight and Baker added number nine with a first-time shot from five yards closer with five minutes of the game remaining.
