Bridgwater Town Reserves’ three game winning streak came to an end against a stubborn Backwell United on Saturday.

The immediate reaction after the game was that this was two valuable points dropped. But as the other results became know it was very much a case of a point won after Bishops Lydeard were the only team in the top half of the table to win - and going top after their 5-4 win against Cheddar.

Town and Backwell were the only other teams in the top nine to gain points as Watchet, Shirehampton, Castle Cary, Winscombe and Brislington Reserves, as well as Cheddar, all lost.

The reserves welcomed seventh-placed Backwell to Fairfax Park but could not find a way past the visitors’ determined back line.

The goalless draw leave Town reserves in third place in the Somerset County League - three points behind leaders Bishops Lydeard, but crucially with three games in hand over their rivals.

The result also saw the end of their hot streak after recording back-to-back wins against Winscombe, Cutters Friday, and Taunton Blackbrook in recent weeks.

Both sides missed penalties and the visitors had a man sent off early in the game on Saturday leaving reserves boss Rob Dray disappointed.

He said: “It was frustrating not to win – we had plenty of chances but were never at our best, but luckily for us all the other sides around us lost.

“In the end I’m happy with a point and we’ve got the chance to put it right now.”
