Somerset County Women’s League Division 1
Bridgwater Town 2, Frome Town Res 0
On a sunny but chilly afternoon at Fairfax Park a double from top goalscorer Ami Ward won the points for the home side as they went back to the top of the table after former league leaders Ilminster had their game at Street called off.
The game started well for Town as they opened the scoring in the third minute from their first serious attack. A superbly judged through-ball from Aneka Russ found Ward in space and she had time to pick her spot before beating Frome goalkeeper Hannah Christer low to her right.
The game then petered out somewhat and although Town created several half chances the quality of the finishing wasn‘t up to their recent standards.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Town creating all the goal-scoring opportunities but the score remained at 1-0 thanks to some dogged defending from the Frome rear guard.
Then, with ten minutes to go, Ward notched her second of the game - her nineteenth of the season - with a fine piece of opportunism as she beat two defenders and calmly lofted the ball over Christer’s head into the net from twenty-five yards to make the game safe for Town.
The Ladies Team are most grateful to Pete Criddle (pictured centre with cap on) for sponsoring the game and to referee Megan Reid-Prescott.
